RCO Editions No. 17: The fate of a Symphony

iPad video magazine, produced for Videodock Client: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Per aspera ad astra, ‘through hardship to victory’ could have been the motto of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. In this 17th RCO Edition we combine Iván Fischer’s performance of the Fifth with a work that ends on a less positive note: Mahler’s Sixth Symphony conducted by Lorin Maazel. Orchestra members Gregor Horsch and Liviu Prunaru feature as soloists in a beautiful performance of Brahms’s Double Concerto and Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony brings...

RCO Editions No. 16: A requiem for the living

iPad video magazine, produced for Videodock Client: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Whilst the Latin Requiem Mass is filled with sorrow and pain, Brahms chose the most consoling texts from the German Bible for his moving Ein deutsches Requiem. This is a Requiem on a human scale for those who have been left behind.

RCO Editions No. 15: Shostakovich’s tenth symphony

iPad video magazine, produced for Videodock Client: Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra The Tenth Symphony marked a turning point in Shostakovich’s work: in it he settled his accounts with Stalin, his greatest enemy. Stalin’s death meant greater freedom and happiness for Shostakovich, although he also saw the consequences of Stalin’s decades of terror all too clearly.

Bewijs...

Snapshots at G:C – a dutch perspective: zombie puppets

We’ve seen some weird stuff at #GC2015, we’ve heard some disturbing stories from other places of the world and we slipped into the skin of strange people. But none of that surpasses the scary puppets that raised up from puppet hell to terrorize the puppeteers. After Sashko Brama and DER STAAT we were quite ready for a good laugh. And that was exactly what Tof théâtre delivered with an super clever super compressed performance of 18 minutes in which two new creatures where born and killed, raised from puppet heaven only to return...

Snapshots at G:C – a dutch perspective: at last we get to pull the strings

#GC2015 was all about our role in theatre, but we had to wait till the last day of the festival before we really got to pull the strings with Kate McIntosh’s ALL EARS. Too bad it didn’t make any sense to most of us. What can I say? There’s always a performance that just doesn’t get to you. This was the one. McIntosh started with a lot of questions, some of them funny, but compared to the amount of questions asked, it was a sparse collection of laughs. And after that we got to take the place apart. Pulling things...

Snapshots at G:C – a dutch perspective: nevermind the state

What happens when a performance is really up to the audience? Alexander Manuiloff has created a play that lets you experience just that. You’re not totally left in the dark though: there’s one light and a table with something on it… At the end we could all take a piece of the script home. And Manuiloff was there to ask us not to share more then three lines of it online, since the piece is going to be shown in other European cities. A request I’m sure all the attendants are going to obey. I’m going to give you...

Snapshots at G:C – a dutch perspective: finally doom that makes sense

What can you do when your country is destroyed? “Nothing” was not an option for Sashko Brama. So he put together a theatric metal performance to bring his message across. With great succes. As some of you might have read I was skeptical about this kind of engagement. For me, engagement in music too often feels as just another way of self promotion, even when the self proclaimed prophets are sincere in their core. And I have to admit that five minutes after Sashko Brama started, I feared the worst. But he turned it all around....

Snapshots at G:C – a dutch perspective: hard work to follow the right ETIQUETTE

I have to say I was a bit afraid for this performance. I met my current wife while participating in fake speeddate performance on a festival. I was married to someone else at the time. So without sharing all the details lets just assume I know first hand that one simple performance can change your life. But my fear was misplaced. When you really follow ‘ETIQUETTE’, you’re way too busy performing. With ETIQUETTE, two people take the role of performer, following a script that unfolds by someone talking to you through...
