In this 17th RCO Edition we combine Iván Fischer’s performance of the Fifth with a work that ends on a less positive note: Mahler’s Sixth Symphony conducted by Lorin Maazel. Orchestra members Gregor Horsch and Liviu Prunaru feature as soloists in a beautiful performance of Brahms’s Double Concerto and Beethoven’s Fourth Symphony brings the Edition to an optimistic close; it also marks the final instalment of Iván Fischer’s recordings of the complete Beethoven symphonies in RCO Editions.

Hoe ver kan ik komen? Tot hoever kun je komen? Is het mogelijk om origineel te zijn zonder een zin zelf te schrijven? Altijd uniek en origineel. Ik denk dat het kan, dat ik heel ver kom. Verder dan je dromen kan. Verder dan jij je in je stoutste dromen kunt voorstellen. Verder dan ver. Dat denk ik. Maar denken alleen is niet genoeg, dat snap ik ook. Ik moet het laten zien. We’ve seen some weird stuff at #GC2015, we’ve heard some disturbing stories from other places of the world and we slipped into the skin of strange people. But none of that surpasses the scary puppets that raised up from puppet hell to terrorize the puppeteers. After Sashko Brama and DER STAAT we were quite ready for a good laugh. And that was exactly what Tof théâtre delivered with an super clever super compressed performance of 18 minutes in which two new creatures where born and killed, raised from puppet heaven only to return as a zombie puppets ready to slice the puppeteers. It sounds ridiculous I know, but we all saw it happen, as real as reality can get. Scary shit to laugh your lungs out! But wait. It gets even better. Cause afterwards all us happy parents got to make a zombie puppet together with our kids and guess what? Mine have come to life...

#GC2015 was all about our role in theatre, but we had to wait till the last day of the festival before we really got to pull the strings with Kate McIntosh’s ALL EARS. Too bad it didn’t make any sense to most of us. What can I say? There’s always a performance that just doesn’t get to you. This was the one. McIntosh started with a lot of questions, some of them funny, but compared to the amount of questions asked, it was a sparse collection of laughs. And after that we got to take the place apart. Pulling things connected to the wires, making chairs fall, pans crash and create a whole lot of noise. Noise that was supposedly recorded, because a little later we got to hear it again, with an added post production to dramatize the sounds. Funny at moments, but all in all it seemed more of a theatre ‘exercise’ than a play that plays the minds and hearts...

What happens when a performance is really up to the audience? Alexander Manuiloff has created a play that lets you experience just that. You’re not totally left in the dark though: there’s one light and a table with something on it… At the end we could all take a piece of the script home. And Manuiloff was there to ask us not to share more then three lines of it online, since the piece is going to be shown in other European cities. A request I’m sure all the attendants are going to obey. I’m going to give you nothing more than was already revealed: the story unravels around the self-burning of a Bulgarian in 2013. It is the main story line, but at the same time it is really just a line, so people have something to digest, to hold on to. Participation is so often such a forced joke. Like when you’re online and bump into some ‘interactive’...

What can you do when your country is destroyed? “Nothing” was not an option for Sashko Brama. So he put together a theatric metal performance to bring his message across. With great succes. As some of you might have read I was skeptical about this kind of engagement. For me, engagement in music too often feels as just another way of self promotion, even when the self proclaimed prophets are sincere in their core. I have to say I was a bit afraid for this performance. I met my current wife while participating in fake speeddate performance on a festival. I was married to someone else at the time. So without sharing all the details lets just assume I know first hand that one simple performance can change your life. But my fear was misplaced. When you really follow ‘ETIQUETTE’, you’re way too busy performing. With ETIQUETTE, two people take the role of performer, following a script that unfolds by someone talking to you through headphones (you might have seen the video footage in my earlier post). It builds up nicely, first introducing you to the format, giving you time to adapt, then pulling you in through the story itself. Watch out! If you are to fall in love, it’s at this moment!
