Richard Strauss was an old man and near the end of his life when he wrote his oboe concerto; its radiant light and life are surprising, considering his age and the dark times that Germany was then experiencing. This same lightness of touch gives sparkling new life to Martijn Padding’s setting of a sixteenth-century Dutch song, Ick Seg Adieu (I Bid You Adieu), and is just as unexpected in Britten’s setting of Arthur Rimbaud’s bizarre and fanciful visions. Clarity, lightness of touch and a playful spirit lie at the heart of this Edition.
