Anton Bruckner called his Fifth Symphony his ‘contrapuntal masterpiece’. Indeed, the music is of an incredible technical ingenuity, a grand musical creation, like his eight other symphonies. However as a human being Bruckner was painfully modest. How is it possible that Bruckner’s work and life seem to have so little in common?
